Welcome to the Social Studies Department!

Social Studies Curricula in Middle Schools in Harford County:

Sixth grade students will begin new units of study this year. The curriculum will emphasize looking at concepts throughout history with a focus on how geography impacts the world in which we live. Topics will include experiences in different time frames throughout history in physical and human geography, culture, political, economic, and social systems

In seventh grade, students will explore prehistory through the Middle Ages. They will discover what is necessary for a civilization and learn how ancient civilizations emerged.

Eighth grade students will focus on American History, beginning with the rise of America during the Colonial period, on through the American Revolution and the establishment of a new government. They will also study the Civil War and Reconstruction. Students will focus on analyzing multiple texts and creating written responses to demonstrate understanding

At each grade level, students will learn skills aimed at helping them to “think like a social scientist” with an emphasis on inquiry-based learning to become better citizens of the global village in which we live.
