Welcome to the Social Studies Department!

Social Studies Curricula in Middle Schools in Harford County:

Sixth grade students focus on Contemporary World Geography. Units of study include physical and human geography, an introduction to culture, political, economic, and social systems, conflict and cooperation and globalization.

In seventh grade, students will explore prehistory through the Middle Ages. They will discover what is necessary for a civilization and learn how ancient civilizations emerged.

Eighth grade students will focus on American History, beginning with the rise of America during the Colonial period, on through the American Revolution and the establishment of a new government. They will also study westward expansion, the Civil War and Reconstruction.

At each grade level, students will learn skills aimed at helping them to “think like a social scientist” with an emphasis on inquiry-based learning in order to become better citizens of the global village in which we live.
